  1. USAF JRE Plan AFC2ISRC/SCD

  2. Purpose • Provide overview of the USAF’s plan for implementing Joint Range Extension functionality

  3. AF JRE Perspective • JRE meets BLOS requirements • Decreases forward footprint for AOC • Bomber needs for situational awareness enroute • Lessen need for airborne relays • JRE is considered a function not a box • JRE function on multiple platforms for: • Theater-wide exchanges • Mission-specific exchanges • Reachback/BLOS exchanges • Service and joint agreement on data forwarding rules and protocolsrequired – Done!

  4. JRE Spiral Development Fully integrate JRE into required systems Test & Implement Protocols Co-host Software Today Field standalone to fill gaps Roving Sands 00

  5. AF JRE - Today • JRE/TMPG Equipment Package (JTEP) • Fielding JRE Standalone Gateway at each CRC/CRE • Currently on 10 systems funded • Use legacy protocols along with MIL-STD-3011 • AOC JRE • Standalone gateway with ADSI provides situational awareness/reachback • Fielded through TST Comm Suite (ACEP) program • Utilize legacy protocols along with MIL-STD-3011 • B-2 fielding non-integrated JRE capability (CY03) • Procuring 20 systems • Roll-on/off Beyond Line of Sight Enhancement (ROBE) (CY03) • 40 KC-135 being modified to accept pallet • 20 pallets procured

  6. ROBE Design Link-16 Network JRE/STJ Network Intel Network ENTR card BLOS radio Link-16 radio SA display Growth Gateway Functionality & Broadcast Intel LOS Comm SA Display Foundation BLOS Comm

  7. ROBE Concept • Non-integrated system • Link-16 messages passed over UHF TACSAT radio PSAB

  10. JRE Near-Term (05-06) Architecture • Integrate JRE function into Battle Control System (CRC modernization) • JREAP Appendices A, B, & C • Scalable Unit Type Codes to provide gap filler (if necessary) • Integrate JRE function into Tactical Air Control Party • Currently planned for Spiral 2 – FY06 • Receive-only (perhaps) • JREAP Appendices A, B, & C • Field additional ROBE pallets – 60 total • Possible use on disadvantaged platforms • AFSOC • HH-60

  12. JRE Long-Term Vision • All Bombers (B-1, B-2, B-52) integrate JRE function • UHF initially with upgrade to EHF • All USAF C2 platforms possess BLOS TDL capability • JRE function in CLIP/Objective Gateway • JRE function in SMART Tanker • Multi-Mission Payload program? • Follow-on for ROBE • JRE function in JICO Support System (JSS)

  13. Conclusion • USAF plans to make Link 16 data available with or without a JTIDS/MIDS terminal • JRE is a functionality to bed integrated into host system – not a standalone box • Near-term needs call for ground and airborne standalone systems
