  1. Dental Implants - Know Benefits and Procedure Are you thinking of getting dental implants to replace your missing teeth? You probably want to learn more about this orthodontic treatment before you opt for dental implants in Mississauga or look for a dental clinic in the area. Exactly what are dental implants and how are they done? In a gist, dental implants are the newest alternative to conventional dentures. They are pricier yet arguably more reliable options, bringing back the teeth that you've lost by replacing them with implants that look and feel natural. Here’s all the basic information that you need to know about dental implants in Mississauga if you’re thinking of getting them. How the procedure is done A dental implant—usually a small titanium post—is surgically placed below the gum or into the jawbone. This screw-like material is designed to imitate the root of the tooth and is where the artificial tooth will be anchored. When mounted to an implant, the artificial tooth won't slip or shift in your mouth (unlike dentures), so you will feel more comfortable talking, eating, and laughing. Length of treatment Implants can be placed using either a one-stage or a two-stage process. If you qualify for a one-stage procedure, you can expect a healing abutment to be placed during surgery. This abutment will protrude through your gum tissues. After 3 to 6 months of healing during which the implant and your bone fuses together, your dentist will then place a crown on the implant and the procedure is finished. This type of treatment is recommended for patients with good bone quality and for areas of the mouth where aesthetics is not a big concern (such as the back areas). In a two-stage procedure, the implant is placed into your jawbone and your gum tissues bury them, leaving them to heal. A second surgery is then performed once the site heals, during which an abutment is placed to secure the crown. Your dentist may recommend this approach if your bone quality is poor. Other expectations The number one question patients ask about dental implants in Mississauga is if the surgery is painful. Just like in any dental surgery, some level of pain and discomfort can be expected during the dental implant procedure. Don't worry—local anesthesia is administered to eliminate and minimize your discomfort. Your dentist will also prescribe medications to ease the pain that you might feel after the surgery. Benefits of dental implants Unlike dentures, dental implants look and function like your own teeth because they are permanently attached to your bone. You won't have difficulty speaking and eating with your new implants and you never have to or worry about them accidentally slipping.
