  2. Life In The Beginning • Deborah was the 5th born out of 7 children. • She was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts on December 17, 1760. • Deborah served as an indentured servant her family had to take care of a lot of kids with a little money because the were poor.

  3. Revolutionary War • Deborah enlisted in the war in 1778 at age 18. • Because women couldn’t fight in any wars she went undercover as her late brother Robert Shurtlieff. • She successfully joined on May 20, 1782.

  4. During The War • In July of 1782 Deborah was shot in her leg by a musket and she got cut across her forehead. • She begged to be left to die but her fellow soldiers refused to leave any man behind so they took her to the doctors. • Deborah was treated for her head injury but left before they could treat her legs so she pulled out the bullet her self.

  5. Loyalist or Patriot ? • Deborah was a patriot because she fought in the war to protect her country . • She served for 1 ½ years before she was discharged.

  6. After The War • Deborah survived the war and she got married to Benjamin Garnnett. • Benjamin and Deborah had 4 children together named Earl , Mary , Patience , and Susanna Baker Shepard (an adopted orphan)
