  2. What Does INVASIVE SPECIES Mean? • ALIEN or EXOTIC- Non-Native • Causes problems in the new environment

Characteristics of Invasive Species: What makes a species invasive? • Reproduce rapidly • Lack predators and diseases that would otherwise keep the numbers down • Adapts to new environments quickly • Plants can change the environment to suit its own survival needs • Able to live off a wide variety of food sources

  6. European Starling • On purpose or by accident? PURPOSE- In 1890, 100 birds were released into Central Park in New York City by fans of William Shakespeare, who had mentioned the bird in his writings.

  9. Purple Loosestrife • On purpose or by accident? BOTH- It was introduced accidentally as a contaminant in the ballast of ships and on purpose as a medicinal herb to treat bleeding, wounds, ulcers, and others

  14. Cause and Effect Killed at least 50-100 million ash trees One of the most destructive non-native insects in U.S.

What is being done to stop invasive species? • Mechanical- prescribed fire, manual removal, explosives • Biological- natural enemies such as insects or pathogens that attack the invasive species • Chemical- manipulation of water or soil chemistry to increase the growth of native species • Cultural- educating people, encouraging actions that minimize the spread of invasive species

What can YOU do? • NEVER release exotic plants or animals into the wild. • Urge your family and friends to plant only native species in yards or gardens. • DON’T move firewood! • “If you are a boater, inspect and remove aquatic plants, animals, and mud from your boat, motor, and trailer. • Educate your family and friends.
