  1. Sensor Web Enablementand GEOSSPresented by: Terence van Zyl

  2. Content GEOSS System of Systems Approach Sensor Web an Open System OGC SWE as a Sensor Web Task DA-07-04

  3. GEOSS The System of Systems Approach Where a system is a collection of components

  4. System Overview Open Systems Permeable Boundaries React to Environment Closed Systems Solid Boundaries No External Interaction

  5. GEOSS Systems View Systems contributing to GEOSS may be Open or Closed GEOSS itself must be an Open System Interoperability React to environment (Adaptability) Increases survivability

  6. Open System Architecture Computer System Interoperability within the system Portability from one platform to another Open standards

  7. Sensors Deployed for single purpose or function Heterogeneous platforms Disparate data sets Spatio-temporally discrete Proprietary Software

  8. Sensor Web Definition “Group of potentially muti-modal data gathering devices coupled with computational intelligence and communication such that the overall system capabilities transcend those provided by a group of isolated sensors” (John M. Dolan 2007)‏

  9. Sensor Web Open System Interoperable, portable and open standards Computational Intelligence Collaborative Value beyond the individual component Data Fusion

  10. Sensor Web Approaches Sensor Web Agent Platform (SWAP)‏ Multi Agent Approach OGC Sensor Web Enablement (SWE)‏ Service Oriented Approach Hourglass Peer 2 Peer Approach

  11. OGC SWE SWE is not a Sensor Web SWE enables the creation of a Sensor Web Provides Open Standards Portability is available through SOA Interoperability Across heterogeneous platforms

  12. OGC SWE Lacks computational intelligence AI may be built into services Collaboration is not inherent Provides the mechanism for collaboration Once service combined we can start to provide value beyond the individual

  13. OGC SWE Framework Objectives Discover sensors, observations & processes Determination of capabilities and reliability Retrieve real-time or time-series data Task sensors and simulators Subscribe to published alerts

  14. OGC SWE Framework Supporting Standards Sensor Observation Service (SOS)‏ Sensor Alerting Service (SAS) use (WNS)‏ Sensor Planning Service (SPS)‏ Sensor Modeling Language (SensorML)‏ Observation & Management (O&M)‏ Transducer Modeling Language

  15. Sensor Observation Service Get Capabilities, Capabilities Doc Describe Sensor, SensorML Get Observation, O&M

  16. GEOSS and OGC SWE GEOSS requires open system, OGC SWE is an open architecture OGC SWE not the only option OGC SWE is an easy step in the right direction

  17. DA-07-04 Sensor Web Enablement for In-Situ Observing Network Facilitation

  18. Description Development of scenarios or use cases that demonstrate the value of Sensor Webs to the GEOSS SBAs. Specific domains that can benefit from Sensor Web are for instance Disasters, Health, Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Water.

  19. Activities A geospatial information infrastructure connecting heterogeneous in-situ sensors and remote sensors, shall be defined. This includes the definition and design of the Sensor Web Communication- and Information layers. The Task should evaluate the applicable standards for the application of a Sensor Web based approach for the different GEO SBAs To provide a mechanism to register and categorise Web services, a service registry shall be investigated.

  20. Activities Case studies shall be designed as demonstration projects for at least 3 SBAs Coordination shall be established with the Interoperability arrangements for GEOSS through coordination with Tasks AR-07-01 and AR-07-02 Relevant synergies with other GEOSS Tasks shall be addressed

  21. Thank-You
