Utilization of Corticosteroids in Croatian primary care: longitudinal study 2005-201 4

This study investigates the trends in the total consumption and structure of corticosteroid usage in Croatia from 2005 to 2014. The results show a reduction in the consumption of pure corticosteroids, with the majority being corticosteroids of strength III. The consumption of corticosteroids in combination with antibiotics and antiseptics has increased. The study raises questions about the justification for the consumption of corticosteroids of strength III.

  2. Aim • The aim of this research is to investigate the trends in total consumption and the structure of consumption of corticosteroids in Croatia • Period: 2005 – 2014

  3. Method • Data was collected from the Annual reports of Croatian Agency for Medical Products and Medical Devices, 2005 – 2015; anatomical therapeutic chemical classification (ATC) is used and pharmaceutical utilization is expressed in Defined Daily Doses per 1000 inhabitants per day (DDD/TID) and financial spending in HRK. • Their purpose is mainly for topical use, DDD/TID cannot be given exactly; consumption is only presenting financial spending. • Corticosteroids are classified in D07 group of dermatological and their consumption is showed by classification in strength group I-IV and in combinations with antibiotics, antiseptics and in other combinations.

  4. Consumption of corticosteroids • Results

  5. Utilisation of topic corticosteroids, 2005 – 2015

  6. Utilisation of corticosteroids - strength I- IV

  7. Utilisation of corticosteroids - strength I- IV

  8. Results • The structure of financial consumption of corticosteroids shows that the consumption for the pure corticosteroids is in reducing trend by 9,6% till 2015, and 90% of them are corticosteroids III (Fig.2.). • The consumption of the combinations of corticosteroids and antiseptics is 25% in total consumption of corticosteroids while the strong corticosteroids III takes about 90%.

  9. Results • Consumption of corticosteroids with antibiotics increased (10%) • Consumption of group III inreased from 35% (2005) to 90% (2015). • Consumption of corticosteroids in other combinations are stable(6%). 95% of it are corticosteroids III. • In total, consumption of dermatological decreased by 15,5%.

  10. Conclusions • Corticosteroids take the he biggest part in consumption of dermatological which is in the reducing trend. Thereby, it is mostly spent for corticosteroids III which take part of 90% whether they are given pure or in combination. • Question is, is the consumption of corticosteroids group III justified?
