  1. Memories About Auschwitz Byy Jordan Todd,

  2. Where is Auschwitz. • Auschwitz is in Poland, about 40 miles west of Krakow. • It was established by the Nazis in the suburbs of the city of Oswiecim which, like other parts of Poland, was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War. Auschwitz was the German name for the town.

  3. How Many People Died in Auschwitz, • The total number who died at Auschwitz is estimated at between 1.1 million and 1.5 million, 90% of which were Jews; also among the dead were some 19,000 Roma (Gypsies), who were killed in July 1944, and some 83,000 Poles.

  4. when was Auschwitz Built? • The camp at Auschwitz was established in May 1940 as a large and harsh concentration camp, initially intended mainly for uncooperative Poles and Polish patriots and intellectuals. • The extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II) was built in 1941-42 and became fully operational in the spring of 1942.

  5. On Rememberance Day ! • Originally called Armistice Day, this day commemorated the end of the hostilities for the Great War (World War I), the signing of the armistice, which occurred on 11 November 1918 - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Armistice Day was observed by the Allies as a way of remembering those who died, especially soldiers with 'no known grave'.

  6. Holocaust ! • The Holocaust was the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. "Holocaust" is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were an alien threat to the so-called German racial community.
