  3. The Death Penalty • United State is the only country in the western world • Since 1976, more than 580 people have been executed • Public support has declined. • The time for building a movement to abolish the death penalty is now

  4. The Death Penalty should be banned. • The death penalty is racist. • The death penalty condemns the innocent to die. • The death penalty is not a deterrent to violent crime.

  5. The death penalty is racist • Africa Americans – 12% U.S. population But, 42 % of prisoners on death row. • 80% of the victims in death penalty case were white, only 14% were black.

  6. The death penalty is racist • Only 42 out of over 18,000 executions involved a white person for killing a black person. • In 1972, US Supreme court rule that death penalty law is unconstitutional.

  7. The death penalty condemns the innocent to die. • The possibility exists that innocent people may be put to death. • Since 1973, 123 people have been released. • 1 Death Row prisoner wrongfully convicted for every 7 executed.

  8. The death penalty is not a deterrent to violent crime. • States with death penalty have a homicide rate of 5.91 per 100,000, states without the death penalty 4.10 • 44% difference.
