(400 BC) • Twelve Tablets, Roman Republic • Methods: crucifixion, drowning, beating to death, burning alive, and impalement • Middle Ages (500-1500 AD) • Methods (Trials by ordeal): boiling, burning at the stake, hanging, beheading, and drawing and quartering • Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (1600-1700s AD) • Crimes punishable by death penalty in Europe: stealing, cutting down a tree, and robbing a rabbit warren
