  1. ECE Birth through Kindergarten Methods Block Welcome to the ECE Birth through Kindergarten (B-K) Methods Block Fall 2012 Orientation Presentation

  2. What is the methods block? • Prior to student teaching, teacher candidates in the birth through Kindergarten ( B-K) teacher education program ( traditional concentration) will participate in a semester long block of courses and field work. The courses and field work will be an extensive experience in order to prepare them to teach and work with children in the infant through pre-k learning environment.

  3. All KSU students should meet the following criteria prior to taking methods block courses Kennesaw State University • Admitted in the B-K teacher education program at KSU • Maintain a 2.75 GPA • Received at least a “C” as a final grade for upper level courses • Clean and clear criminal background check ( Field placements may ask you to provide a copy of your background check for their files) • Updated and approved infant/toddler child first aid and CPR ( You should have received in the ECE 3540 course) • Met with your advisor and developed an advisement plan to ensure that all coursework is completed prior to student teaching. • Applied to take the Methods Block Courses a semester prior to taking the Methods Block Courses

  4. Registration • Register for all four methods classes: • ECE 3530 (Methods of Movement) • ECE 3560 (Methods of Art and Music) • ECE 4515 (Methods of Teaching Language) • ECE 4545 (Methods of Teaching Math and Science)

  5. Methods Block Structure • 4 Methods Classes • ECE 3530 – Methods of Movement • ECE 3560 – Methods of Art and Music • ECE 4515 – Methods of Language • ECE 4545 – Methods of Math and Science • Recommended 160 hours field component – at least 1 day a week for 10 weeks and 5 weeks of full teaching ( schedule determined with collaborating teacher and B-K students)

  6. Suggested Methods Block Structure • 160 clock hours field component-must be spread out over 15 week period • at least 1 Day per week for 10 weeks • In the field for 5 weeks (schedule developed with collaborating teacher) • Observed by • Collaborating Teacher • University Methods Block Supervisor

  7. Methods Block Structure • 10 Weeks • 4 methods classes • 2 days per week • at least 1 day per week in the field • 5 Weeks • Full time field experiences • No class for methods courses • At least four observations by university Methods Block supervisor and collaborating teacher

  8. Calendar • August 17, 2012-First Day of Classes at KSU • August 30, 2012-Student Teaching Application Due ( You must meet with your advisor prior to this date)

  9. Weeks of August 21, 2012– October 26, 2012 • Week of August 27, 2012 Contact field placement site to arrange schedule and begin field work • 2 Days – Methods Classes at KSU • Tuesdays and Thursdays • September 3, 2012 No classes (Labor Day Holiday) • September 14, 2012 Registration Deadline for October 13, 2012 Birth through Five GACE exam (Tests 005 and 006). • February 8, 2013 deadline for the March 23, 2013 Birth through Five GACE exam (Tests 005 and 006)

  10. September 27-29, 2012 GAYC conference in Duluth, GA • October 12, 2012 Last day to withdrawal from classes without academic penalty

  11. October 29, 2012- First Official Day for Full-Time Field Experience • Subsequent days to be determined by B-K Candidate and Collaborating Teacher • Weeks of October 29, 2012 –December 5, 2012- Full Time in Field- No class meetings for methods block courses • unless otherwise noted • November 1, 2012 Last Day to petition to graduate for Spring 2013

  12. November 7-10, 2012 NAEYC conference in Atlanta • November 15, 2012 Midterm Methods Block Meeting- Early Childhood Education Ethics Seminar Least First 2 Observations Summaries Due • Week of November 21, 2012- November 25, 2012-Thanksgiving Holiday Wednesday – Sunday at KSU • All field hours, assignments and evaluations should be completed by , 2012 December 5, 2012  

  13. Remember!!! • Student Teaching Applications are due August 30, 2012. 1. Go to: http://www.kennesaw.edu/education/ofe/st.html and follow the first steps, 1 and 2. 2. Please see bring application to methods classes August 28, 2012 to go over your application.

Important • Please remember that you must take the B-5 GACE test and pass it in order to receive B-5 certification • Take it early • GACE B-5 is being offered October 13, 2012. • Registration for the March 23, 2013, 2011 test date is February 8, 2013 • Additional information may be located at • http://www.gace.nesinc.com/

  15. Seminars • There will be seminars regarding Ethics, Child Guidance, GACE Exam, Kindergarten Teaching during the Methods Block Semester ( Time and Place –TBA). Whenever possible, these seminars will take place during scheduled methods block times

  16. Field Experience Assignments determined by Methods instructors Field Experience Assignments are to be turned into Methods Block Supervisor Be sure to review your syllabi for assignments and attendance policy Get involved in the class as much as the collaborating teacher allows

  17. Attendance • Field experience must be spread out for the 15 weeks • Field Experience time for EXCUSED absences must be made up • Failure to attend = Failure of Methods Course • Please communicate with your collaborating teacher , methods block supervisor and school administrator regarding emergencies and absences • Please read and comply with the attendance policy of your methods course instructor and methods block supervisor

  18. Assignments • Please review course syllabi for assignments. ( Will be distributed in methods block courses) • Successful completion of field experience component is a major assignment • Additional assignments and at least one lesson plan developed and administered per methods course may be required

  19. Assignments-Additional information provided in classes. • Students will be evaluated by the candidate performance instrument (CPI) This must be presented to your methods block supervisor for a grade. • Students will be required to conduct the Impact on Student Learning Assignment (ISLA) for B-5. This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the effectiveness of your teaching on your students. • Students will develop and keep a Methods Block notebook for assignments and lessons

  20. Field PlacementFYI • You may attend planning meetings and field trips with the approval of your field experience teacher and school administrator. • Your collaborating teacher is determined by the school administrator at your field site. • Please email Dr. Raynice Jean-Sigur with any problems or questions.   21. Important • At NO TIME are you to be alone with the children. • If the teacher is absent, there must be a substitute in the room. You cannot be the substitute. (You can be in charge of the class, but there must be school personnel in the room.) • Please contact or e-mail Dr. Raynice Jean- Sigur ( rjeansig@kennesaw.edu)for additional questions or concerns.

  22. Remember!!! • Professionalism is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Every time you enter the school, you are interviewing for a job. • Please check with your field site regarding appropriate dress code • If you have questions, check the Methods Handbook (This will be provided at the beginning of the semester).

  23. Responsibilities for B-K teacher candidates • Register for courses • Attend class and complete all assignments successfully • Make sure that collaborating teacher and school administrator have copies of syllabus and all methods block forms • Contact assigned field placement site upon approval from instructor and make arrangements to complete field hours and assignments( provide criminal background check if needed)

  24. Responsibilities for B-K candidates • Inform KSU instructor, Methods Block Supervisor, collaborating teacher and school administrator regarding changes in contact information, absences, emergencies, field placement concerns and assignment completion • Be professional at all times; dress professionally ; maintain confidentiality • Respect the children, collaborating teacher, school administrator, university supervisors, staff, parents and field placement site

  25. Responsibilities for B-K Candidates • Teach at least 4 lessons in the field site and provide self-evaluation and reflection • Assist the teacher with lessons, working with children, lesson preparation as appropriate • Develop and complete methods block notebook and ISLA assignment • Complete 160 clock hours of field work successfully • Complete additional assignments as required by methods block instructors

  26. Responsibilities of Collaborating Teacher • Assist KSU B-K students with understanding the policies, procedures and routines of learning environment and school. • Assist KSU B-K students with lesson plan development, assessment, routines and curriculum implementation • Be a mentor/role model for the KSU B-K student in working with children, families, staff and others.

  27. Responsibility of Collaborating teacher • Assist KSU B-K students with communicating and handling issues regarding children and families • Evaluate KSU B-K student regarding lesson plan performance, and overall performance • (KSU student should provide the forms to teachers) • Contact KSU instructors or Methods Block Supervisor regarding questions or concerns

  28. Responsibilities of University Supervisor/Instructor • Provide syllabus and information regarding methods block assignments to B-K students • Teach and assist in the preparation of students for B-K methods block experience • Teach lesson plan development, assessment and developmentally appropriate best practices for infants through five years of age. • Assist in the supervision of B-K students in field placement site during methods block

  29. Responsibilities of University Supervisor • Evaluate and grade assignments and field experience for methods block • Intervene or remove students from field experience if concerns justify these actions. (School administrators maybe contacted prior to this action) • Assist and communicate with the KSU student, collaborating teacher, and/or school administrator regarding issues, questions and concerns as appropriate.

  30. Concerns??? • Concerns about your Methods block classes, assignments, or grades, first discuss with your class professor and university supervisor. • If the issue is still unresolved then you should contact Dr. Jim Cope, the ECE dept. chair @ jcope@kennesaw.edu • If any concerns arise regarding your field experience classroom or the children you teach, they should be communicated to your collaborating teacher and/or school administrator. • If you have additional concerns or questions about the field placement during the Methods block contact Dr. Raynice Jean-Sigur, B-K program coordinator@ rjeansig@kennesaw.edu • Also contact your methods course instructor, KSU Methods Block university supervisor, the collaborative teacher, and the school if you will be absent at any time throughout the semester.
