  2. Concept Cars GM Firebird I: First gas turbine powered car tested in the US. Essentially a jet on wheels, highly impractical for the road. • A concept or show vehicle is a car prototype. • The cars are made to introduce new styling and new technology to the public. • They travel around the country in auto shows. • Concept cars gauge the reaction of the public to new designs to determine if the car would be accepted. • Whether the car is produced or not may be determined upon this customer reaction.

Concept Cars • Harley Earl, a General Motors designer is usually given credit for inventing the concept car. • Popularity of the concept car in the 1950’s through GM’s traveling Motorama shows. • Concept cars are not production cars. • Concept car designs are changed over again before final design is finalized, if it ever gets that far in the process. • Many concept cars never reach the production phase. Motorama Car Show--GM 1953 Corvette Concept Car… yes…this car went to production.

Concept Car Design • Concept cars are often radical in design. • They often use radical non-traditional materials from soy bean plastic, to paper, to carbon fiber. • They may have unique layouts such as more than or less than four doors. • Concept cars may be mock-ups, that is, made of wax, clay, fiberglass, metal, or a combination of these or other materials. • Many times they are not drivable while other times they use available drivetrains. • Most concept cars are destroyed after the auto shows though some do survive. Concept Cars • Some concept cars survive. • Some are forgotten in storage. • Some go to museums. • Some actually get another lease on life. • The 1954 Ford Lincoln Futura was stored away for years. • It was found and used as the Batmobile in the 1966 TV Batman series. 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura The Futura after being converted into the Batmobile

  20. Concept Cars: Assignment • Design a vehicle…it’s that easy. • Decide whether your vehicle will be traditional or non-traditional exotic. • Also, don’t forget that vehicles are designed to accommodate people…which means…people must be able to fit comfortably and safely in the vehicle.

Concept Cars: Assignment • Minimum requirements: • Two-seater sports car…can be larger • Front, mid or rear engine…your choice • Transmission • Fuel tank placement • Spare tire placement • Aerodynamic…how you think air flows over it • People accommodated comfortably & safely • Aesthetics…how it looks

Concept Cars: Assignment • The project will include five drawings. • (wait patiently for screaming to die down) • The first thing to do is brainstorm and make thumbnail sketches. • The first four drawings will be done on graph paper. • The sketches will be done to scale. • You will have a choice of ¼” = 1’ or ½” = 1’ • Illustrations 2A and 3 will need color.

Concept Cars: Assignment • Thumbnail Sketches • Brainstorm ideas about cars. • Draw thumbnail sketches of your brainstorm ideas on a blank sheet of paper. • When you’re done, show them to the Bear, which one will you take to the next level? • Receive your graph paper to begin.   24. Concept Cars: Assignment • Illustration 1 • Cutaway drawing • Show the placement of the interior parts such as the engine, transmission, fuel tank, seats, etc. • Engine…nothing fancy, it may be represented as a rectangular shape. • Examples:
