  2. The General Rules of Perspective • Knowing and using the General Rules of Perspective is another “drawing trick” to help you show depth on a 2-D surface. • Use these “rules” to make your drawings and paintings of still-life and landscapes more realistic.

  3. The General Rules of Perspective Rule 1: overlapping objects

  4. The General Rules of Perspective Rule 2: atmospheric perspective (shading and shadows)

  5. The General Rules of Perspective Rule 3: object placement in the picture plane: objects higher on the page are farther back – objects lower on the page are “closer”

  6. The General Rules of Perspective Rule 4: diminishing size and detail: objects get larger and have more color and detail as they come forward – objects get smaller and have less color and detail as they go back
