Mission Statement • Inspire learning in students through the use of their own innovative ideas.
Objectives • Students will identify real-world technology problems • Students will develop innovative solutions to real-world technology problems • Students will apply math, reading, science, history, art and technology to solve real-world technology problems
What is technology? • Using available resources to meet societies wants and needs • Manufacturing, Construction, Communication, Transportation and Bio-related Technology
What are real-world technology Problems? • Fuel costs, War In Iraq, Health Care Costs, Failing Bridges, Cell-Phone Deaths, etc.
How will my child learn through technology? Fuel Costs • Science? • Math? • History? • Technology? • Reading?
Student Driven • Students will generate their own problems and solutions: Problem: My cell-phone keeps dropping calls. Solution: I want to invent a cell-phone network that doesn’t drop calls.
Math -Cell-Phone Signals -Circuit Design -Purchasing Cell Phones
Science/Technology -How cell phones work (Technology) -Electricity (Physics) -Environmental Impacts (Earth Science)
History • Social Studies: -History Of Cell Phones -Cell Phone Laws (Politics) -Impacts On Society
Reading/Writing • Design Briefs • Evaluations • Research
Innovation • Create a design brief (Descriptive Writing or speaking) • Research Information (History, reading) • Generate Design Ideas (Art)
Invention • Create a final design (Math, Physical Science, Technology) • Test the solution (Science, Technology • Evaluate the solution (Critical Writing)
Theory • Students are motivated through innovation. Resources: -Technology Student Association (TSA) -Technology Education Association of Pennsylvania (TEAP) -International Technology Education Association (ITEA) -STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Education Coalition -National Aeronautical Space Association (NASA)
Belief • Technology has met our needs since the beginning of civilization. Ex. Paper • Technology drives core concepts. Core concepts don’t drive technology. Ex. Mathematics
Pennsylvania State Standards Primary Standards: • Science And Technology • Mathematics Secondary Standards: • History • Reading, Writing Speaking And Listening
