  1. Home Gateway - The Subscriber‘s Choice ITU Workshop on IP Cablecom/ Mediacom 2004/ Interactivity in Multimedia 14. March 2002 INFINEON Matthias Kindler Business Development Manager Communication Business Group Never stop thinking.

  2. AGENDA Part 1: xDSL Technology • xDSL - Broadband over twisted-pair • xDSL - An Access and In-house Distribution Technology • Infineon’s Position in xDSL Part 2: The Home Gateway • Home Gateway - The Subscriber’s Choice • Home Gateway - The Value Chain • Home Gateway - Challenges • HG-Processor - The Heart of the Home Gateway • Home Gateway: Example 1 • Home Gateway: Example 2 • Conclusions

  3. Part 1: xDSL Technology

  4. VDSL ADSL SHDSL 2 - 26 Mbps ISDN 1.5 - 8 Mbps Modem 2 - 26 Mbps 0.3 / 2 Mbps 160 kbps 56 kbps 3 - 4000 feet 12 - 12000 feet > 15000 feet xDSL - Increases The Capacity of Copper Networks

  5. xDSL – Spectral Allocation • Co-exists with legacy services

  6. The ADSL Market • 16 million ADSL subscribers end of 2001 • Expected growth 02/01: 98% • Main growth is expected in Europe and Japan • ADSL is the dominant xDSL Technology today • ADSL is the dominant Broadband Access Technology today Source: SalomonSmith Barney, March 2002

  7. xDSL - Distributing Broadband Services in the Building • xDSL - Not only an Access Technology, but also for In-house data distribution over twisted-pair • 10BaseS is: Ethernet over VDSL • 10BaseS Features: • 10 Mbps symmetric Ethernet • VDSL robust performance • POTS/ISDN support • Reach up to 4000ft/1200m • 10BaseS Typical Applications • MTU/MDU, hospitality • Fiber, Wireless, Cable LAN extension

  8. Ethernet over VDSL - The Best of Both Worlds • Ethernet • Mature, low-cost, zero configuration • Minimal connectivity and service overhead • Quick roll-out, little provisioning • VDSL • Robust performance over single copper pair • Symmetrical and asymmetrical data transmission up to 26Mbps • Reach up to 4000ft/1200m

  12. Home Gateway - Value Chain Standard Groups IC Supplier System House Service Provider Customer Specific Challenges for Standard Groups Specific Challenges for IC Supplier Specific Challenges for System Houses Specific Challenges for Service Providers Customer’s Choice • The Customer’s choice leads to specific challenges and requirements for all parts of the value chain.

  13. The Customer’s Choice leads to challenges... • … for the Service Provider • Customer has the responsibility for his own home network • Customer is confused with all the technology options • Customer wants data, voice and video services • … for the System House • flexible platform needed to be able to adopt fast to different or changing requirements • … for the IC supplier • (see next slide) • … for the standardization group • Time-to-market • Broad industry consensus required

  14. The Customer’s Choice leads to challenges... • … for the IC Supplier • Deal with broad range of Broadband Access Technologies (not all will survive) • Deal with broad range of Home Networking Technologies (not all will survive) • Support of different services: Data, Voice or Video • HW and SW expertise required • ATM and Ethernet expertise necessary • More and more customers require security • Flexible Platform needed

  21. Conclusions • ADSL is the dominant Broadband Access Technology today. • The Subscriber’s choice generates the need for a flexible Home Gateway platform solution. • Service Providers, System Houses, IC suppliers and Standardization Groups face their specific challenges and requirements due to the customer’s choice. • A flexible Home Gateway Processor will be the heart of a Home Gateway to connect different kind of Broadband Access Transceivers with different Home Networking Technologies for different kind of services.
