  1. Chemical Bonding

  2. IONIC BONDbond formed between two ions by the transfer of electrons

  3. Ionic Bond • Between atoms of metals and nonmetals • Bond formed by transfer of electrons • Produce charged ions • Examples; NaCl, CaCl2, K2O

  4. COVALENT BONDbond formed by the sharing of electrons

  5. Covalent Bond • Between nonmetallic elements • Formed by sharing electron pairs • Stable • Examples; O2, CO2, C2H6, H2O, SiC

  6. METALLIC BONDbond found in metals; holds metal atoms together very strongly

  7. Metallic Bond • Formed between atoms of metallic elements • Electron cloud around atoms • Sea of Electrons • Good conductors at all states, lustrous, very high melting points • Examples; Na, Fe, Al, Au, Co

  8. Metallic Bond, A Sea of Electrons

  9. STOP!Now you do this…. You are going to make and fill out the following chart Don’t write this slide

  10. Compare and Contrast Bonds

  11. What is an ELEMENT? • A substance composed of a single kind of atom. • Cannot be broken down into another substance by chemical or physical means.

  12. What is an ELEMENT? • Plural for atoms • Pure- one type of atom only ****Atoms: smallest piece possible

  13. What is a COMPOUND? • A substance in which two or more different elements are CHEMICALLY bonded together.

  14. What is a COMPOUND? • More than one type of element bonded together. • Why form a Compound? • More stable • Lower Energy Level • Gain/lose, share electrons to get there

  15. What is a Molecule? • Smallest part of a compound and still have those properties • ***Smallest Group of atoms that are bonded together • Like: • If broken further it becomes Hydrogen and Oxygen, NOT water H H O

  16. What is a MIXTURE? • Two or more substances that are mixed together but are NOT chemically bonded.

  17. Why do elements bond? • Become more stable • Looking to gain electrons (#5-7) • Looking to lose electrons (#1-3) • Lower energy level to bond than to stay by itself

  18. Quiz Time You do not have to write all this

  19. For each, on your hand hold up: 1 finger – element 2 fingers – compound 3 fingers - mixture

  20. Element, Compound or Mixture?

  21. 3 Mixture: Why?? More than 1 kind of atom and it is not bonded

  22. Element, Compound or Mixture?

  23. 2 Compound: Why? Different atoms are bonded together

  24. Element, Compound or Mixture?

  25. 3 Compound Mixture: Why? More than one kind of atom (even though some are bonded together- not all are)

  26. Element, Compound or Mixture?

  27. 1 Element: Why? Only one kind of particle and NOT bonded

  28. Element, Compound or Mixture?

  29. 2 Compound: Why? More than one kind of particle, bonded with another

  30. Element, Compound or Mixture?

  31. 1 Element: Why? One kind of atom bonded together. It is a group of the same kind of atoms
