  2. Who are they? The Beach Boys were an American rock and roll band formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961. The band included Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine.

  3. Brian Wilson Born June 20, 1942

  4. Dennis Wilson December 19, 1944 – December 28, 1983

  5. Carl Wilson December 21, 1946 – February 6, 1998

  6. Mike Love Born March 3, 1941

  7. Al Jardine Born September 3, 1942

  8. The Pendletones After listening to Johnny Otis on the radio, Brian started to write songs on the piano. The Wilsons soon recruited their cousin Mike Love. Brian also knew Al Jardine, a high school classmate who had already played guitar in a folk group called the Islanders. Brian suggested to Jardine that they team up with his cousin and brothers. It was at these sessions, held in Brian's bedroom, that "the Beach Boys sound" began to form. Brian named the band “The Pendletones” coming from the word Pendleton– which was a woolen shirt popular at the time. In their earliest performances, the band wore heavy wool jacket-like shirts which were favored by surfers in the South Bay.

  9. First Recording • In October of 1961 The Pendletones recorded twelve takes of their original song, “Surfin’.” • A small number of singles were pressed and when the boys saw the first box of singles they were shocked to see that the band’s name was changed to “The Beach Boys.” • Released in December, it was a hit on the West Coast, going to number three in Southern California, and peaked at number 75 on the national pop charts. • By the final weeks of 1961 "Surfin'" had sold more than 40,000 copies. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2sfev-gu3I

  10. Up and Coming • In November 1962, The Beach Boys released their first album called Surfin’ Safari. • In 1963 Brian Wilson wrote a few hit singles such as “Surfin USA.” 1963 was also a year in which the boys did a lot of touring around the world. • After a successful tour that was wrapped up in Australia in January of 1964, they came back to America to face the “British Invasion.”

  11. The British Invasion • Although Brian wanted more time to write their next album, their record label decided that a new album had to be released soon so they wouldn’t be forgotten. • The band released the album Shut Down Volume in February 1964. The critics only like a very few number of songs on the album. • “I Get Around” was released in May 1964. It became their first single to hit number one. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnPL5OXSBNE • Two months later, the album All Summer Long, reached number four on the Billboard 200 charts. • The Beach Boys were one of the few American bands formed prior to the 1964 British Invasion to continue their success.

  12. Looking Beyond Surf Rock • The band decided to begin looking forward and try something different. • They began writing guitar-oriented pop songs that were featured in their new album Summer Days released in June 1965. • The album included a reworked arrangement of “Help Me Rhonda" which had become the band's second number one single in the spring of 1965, displacing the Beatles' “Ticket to Ride".

  13. “The Little Girl I Once Knew” • In November 1965 The Beach Boys released their next single, “The Little Girl I Once Knew.” • Although it was quite different from their usual sound, they still hit number twenty. However, it was their second single not to reach top ten since their 1962 breakthrough. • It was considered the band's most experimental statement of their career, using silence as a pre-chorus, clashing keyboards, moody brass and vocal tics. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX7A8JeHiG8

  14. Pet Sounds • In 1966, the Beach Boys formally established their use of unconventional instruments and elaborate layers of vocal harmonies on their record Pet Sounds. • The album included the new sound of psychedelic rock. Pet Soundsis known for its experimental and revolutionary instrumentation. • In the same year, they released “Good Vibrations", one of their best known songs. The song made use of a Tannerin which helped them claim a new hippie audience.

  15. Continuing Legends • The band began to include other musicians in the early 1980’s. • Although Dennis died in 1983, they continued to do well on their tours. • In 1988, after Brian Wilson officially left the band to work on his solo career, The Beach Boys released “Kokomo,” which was their first number one hit single in 22 years. • The Beach Boys continue to perform today.
