  1. IofT 1910 W Fall 2006Week 4 Plan for today: discuss questions asked in writeup talk about approaches to building intelligence talk about the lab on Thursday

  2. Questions asked • what is a symbiotic robotic system? • what is an RFID tag and how does it work? • what do you think about the vision and challenges described in the paper?

  3. What is a symbiotic robotic system

  4. RFID tags • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag is an object that can be attached to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves. Chip-based RFID tags contain silicon chips and antennas. Passive tags require no internal power source, whereas active tags require a power source. (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFID)

  5. Comments on vision and challenges • “Shift from autonomous, solitary robots, in unknown environments to pervasive robotic systems working in symbiosis with people and smart environments” • Challenges: • Awareness of environment • Safety for people, adapt to people • Shift research focus from localization and full autonomy to information sharing, coordination, prediction of human behavior, etc

  6. Lab on Thursday • Where: in EE/CS 2-140 • You need your U card to get in. • We’ll continue using MEdit and learn how to add sounds and to program the LEDs. Be prepared to write a more complex program than what you have done so far. • The new computers have arrived, but I do not know if they will be ready by Thursday. If you want, you can bring your laptop.
