  2. Definition of Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy is a technique of saving energy, and it is energy derived from the earths internal heat (underground).

  3. How is geothermal energy used? Geothermal energy is used to heat homes and to produce electricity. Geothermal energy is heat sitting under the Earth. We can get the energy by pumping up hot ground water and putting it through a special power plant where is uses the steam to spin turbines, which generates electricity.

  4. What are the advantages? • Geothermal energy can be extracted without burning a fossil fuel (coal, oil and gas) • The technique of Geothermal energy produces little carbon dioxide (CO2). • The carbon dioxide that it does produce is one-sixth of what a partially clean natural-gas fueled power plant would produce. • Geothermal energy is always available.

What are the disadvantages? • While geothermal energy might have advantages, it also has some disadvantages; • Geothermal energy releases Hydrogen sulfide (a gas that smells like a rotten egg when at low concentrations). • The disposal of the geothermal fluids is poor. • The geothermal heat pumps need a lot of land for installation. • Some geothermal sites let out poisonous gases, which can seep into the earth from the holes drilled by the constructors. • The geothermal energy can not easily transported. Because when once the tapped energy is extracted , it can only be used in the adjoining areas. • Geothermal energy is not that expensive, however the costliest part is when constructors dig into the earth’s rock.

  8. What is the impact on public lands? • the impact on public lands is the bureau of land management (BLM) • 249 million acres of public lands is used for geothermal power plants • BLM manages 36 geothermal power plants This is a geothermal power plant

  9. How effective is geothermal energy production? • Geothermal is a reliable source of energy because it will never run out. • It is a clean source of energy that doesn’t release any harmful substances into the environment. • It is renewable and easy to use!

  10. How does geothermal energy compare to the use of fossil fuels? Fossil Fuels Geothermal Energy • Fossil fuels are coal oil and natural gas. • Fossil fuel isn't renewable and is scarcer each year. • Fossil fuels aren't a reliable source of energy because they aren't renewable and harm, the earth. • Geothermal energy is a renewable and reliable source of energy. • It is a dependable source of energy since the earths core is always hot. • It’s a clean sustainable source of energy.

  11. Is Geothermal energy being used globally? Or outside of the United States? • Many countries around the globe are using geothermal energy. Twenty-four countries produce enough electricity to meet the annual need of nearly twelve million typical United States households through geothermal energy. • While in the United States, they use Geothermal energy to produce electricity; to heat buildings, and to pasteurize milk. • Also people in Ireland use geothermal energy to heat their green houses. • People in Canada use geothermal energy to heat homes and buildings. • The United Kingdom has spent fifty million Euros on technology to use geothermal energy, and has used it to make electricity.
