Le fasi iniziali 28 giugno 1914: a Sarajevo viene ucciso in un attentato larciduca Francesco Ferdinando, erede al trono dAustria. 23 luglio 1914: lAustria d lultimatum alla Serbia. 8 luglio 1914: lAustria ritiene insufficiente la risposta serba e dichiara guerra. 29 luglio 1914: la Russia proclama la mobilitazione delle proprie forze armate. 31 luglio 1914: La Germania invia un ultimatum alla Russia. 1 agosto 1914: la Germania dichiara guerra alla Russia e la Francia mobilita le proprie forze armate. 3 agosto 1914: La Germania reagisce con un ultimatum alla Francia e con la successiva dichiarazione di guerra. 4 agosto 1914: la Germania invade il Belgio. 5 agosto 1914: lInghilterra dichiara guerra alla Germania
