What was the Cold War? • Political struggle after WWII • Americans & their allies vs. Russia and their allies • NATO (North Atlanta Treaty Organization) = US, Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Greece, Turkey • Warsaw Pact = Russia, E. Germany, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Albania

How do you think the Cold War influenced Holden's culture? • Caused Americans to become paranoid and fearful because there was a threat of nuclear destruction • Bomb drills, nuclear bunkers, etc. • Anti Communism was very prevalent in American culture • House Un-American Activities Committee investigated suspected Communists, even Jackie Robinson • Spy/war movies were popular during this time period • Lessened trust in authorities/US government

What is the Counter-Culture Cycle? • People that are outside of the norm • Usually not widely respected by most people • Typically younger in age • Generally a new idea that more and more people start to like • The idea continues to increase in popularity until almost everyone likes it • By then, it is considered the new norm • Once it is considered normal, they lose interest because they are no longer different from everyone else • Then the whole cycle starts over with something new

  5. IsHolden an early example of the "Counter-Culture Cycle"? Why/why not? • In my opinion, Holden is an example of the “Counter-Culture Cycle” • The book Catcher in the Rye was written in 1951, and the Counter-Culture Cycle started in the 1950’s and 1960’s
