  3. Nun Training 1928 Became Roman Catholic Loretto nun At Loretto Abbey in Dublin, Ireland Becomes Sister Teresa

  4. Teacher • 1929 Taught Geography at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta, India

  5. 1937 • Takes final vows as a nun

  6. The Calling • September 1946 On a train ride to get cure for suspected tuberculosis, she received calling to serve among the poor. Leaves the convent to serve poor.

  7. 1947-1948 • Permitted to leave order and moves to slum to start school • Transfers her citizenship from Yugoslavia to India • Gets Medical training in Paris, France

  8. Charity • 1950 Founds the Missionaries of Charity 1952 Opens NirmalHriday(Pure heart) 1953 Opens Orphanage Picture of NirmalHriday

  9. AWARDS • 1962- Wins the PadmaShri award • 1971-Receives the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize • 1979- Award Nobel Peace Prize • 1985-Award Medal of Freedom

  10. Injuries • 1983-First Heart attack while visiting Pope John Paul II • 1989-Suffers second heart attack • 1992-Congestive heart failure • 1993-falls and breaks three ribs in may • 1993-surgery for blocked blood vessel in September • 1996-Breaks collarbone in April Malarial fever in August

  11. Step Down • Steps down as head of her order and was succeeded by Sister Narnala

  12. Death • She Died on September 5, 1997 from a heart attack at the age of 87
