  2. GPS • Stands for Global Positioning System • Definition: The system that accurately determines the precise position of something on the earth

  3. What do we use GPS for? • Airplanes and ships • Finding the precise location of a vehicle or person through GPS on their phone or in their car • Monitoring location (Where’s the bus? Where is your package in the mail?)

  4. Remote Sensing • The acquisition of data about Earth’s surface from a satellite orbiting the Earth or from another long-distance method.

  5. Examples? • Satellites that track storms and other weather patterns

  6. GIS • Stands for Global Information System • Definition: A computer system that can capture, store, analyze and display geographic data

  7. USES • GIS is used to make pretty maps! • Maps made with GIS can be more complex than hand-drawn maps • Layers • Layers can be used to compare information and make connections between geographic ideas. • For example… where can we build roads that will be good for the population in the area?
