The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) • Representing Canada’s universities at home and abroad since 1911 • Mandate: to foster and promote the interests of higher education • Represents 92 public and private not-for-profit universities and university colleges • Members are represented by their executive heads

  3. Overview of the university system More than 100 universities and degree-granting colleges operating under provincial jurisdiction Size varies from a few hundred to over 50,000 students Various types of institutions including: research intensive, comprehensive and primarily undergraduate Francophone, anglophone and bilingual institutions Mission: education, research, and community outreach

  4. Federal higher education and research roles • While education is a provincial responsibility in Canada, the federal government • is the primary funding source for university research in Canada • transfers some funding to the provinces to support postsecondary education • plays a large role in student financial aid in Canada • provides support for students through the tax system

  5. Total full-time enrolment is expected to grow by 70,000 to 150,000 students by 2016 Source: Statistics Canada data and AUCC estimates

  6. Many countries have higher university participation rates than Canada

Canadian universities continue to promote the two-way flow of students • Canadian student mobility:Increase from 1% in 2000 to 2.2% in 2006 of full time Canadian students on for-credit short-term study abroad • Continued growth in international students on campus: 70,000 full-time students in 2006 • Increased resources for internationalization and support services for study abroad, international students on campus and for bringing an international dimension to the curriculum • Increased engagement in the development and delivery of offshore educational products and services
