(over 115,000 sq mi) • Located in the Southeast Asian Region. • Location on the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it prone to earthquakes and typhoons • Third most disaster-prone country in the world: Around 22 tropical cyclones affect the country per year

  7. KEY CHALLENGE: OVERCOMING EXTREME WEATHER CHANGES • Debris Flow • 25M to 30M cubic meters of debris flow deposits • Covered 2,472 ha • Stronger Wind Magnitude • 185 kph wind magnitude • 220 kph gustiness • Double Amount of Rainfall

LESSONS LEARNED Tropical Storm Washi (locally known as Sendong) Typhoon Bopha (locally known as Pablo) President’s directive to craft a comprehensive Pablo Rehabilitation Plan Quick Decision/Action by GPH in accepting humanitarian aid Proper Planning and Coordination among Government Agencies Feedback and Assessment • Made landfall on 15 Dec. 2011 in Philippines • 1,268 casualties, 6,071 injured, and 181 missing • Humanitarian Cluster Approach: GPH and Multi-Sector coordination
