  1. Satchel Paige Day 4

  2. Concept talk How do we face personal challenges?

  3. Amazing Words • Discipline- self control • It takes a lot of discipline to practice baseball for long hours without complaining. • Resist- to act against or try to prevent • Jean resisted the plan to close our local library.

  4. Amazing Words Teach your partners what the amazing words mean

  5. Let’s Read Read page 134-135 on your own. What order dos the author tell about events from Roberto Clemente’s life? What other literary device helps you understand?

  6. Biographies • I know that most biographies are told in chronological order-the same sequence in which they happened in real life. To see the order of events in this selection, I can look for clues, such as dates, Clemente’s age during different events, and clue words or phrases such as first, later and went on to.

  7. Biographies • Read page 136-137 • How does the author want us to feel about Roberto Clemente? • What literary language does the author use to do this?

  8. Biographies • I know that many kinds of nonfiction are based on facts. In biographies, authors often offer opinions as well as facts. • When I see language such as “tragically”, I know that this is the author’s opinion. Most people would agree that the event was tragic, but tragic is something that cannot be proved true or false.

  9. Biographies The author describes it this way because he wants us to feel that Clemente was a hero who made a great sacrifice.

  10. Fluency With your partner read the story Roberto Clemente again. Use correct phrasing and inflection.

  11. Vocabulary • Confidence- firm belief in yourself • Fastball- a pitch thrown at high speed with very little curve • Teach your partner what these words mean.

  12. Vocabulary • Mocking- describes something done in a way that laughs at or makes fun of someone • Outfield-part of the baseball field beyond the bases • Teach your partner what these words mean

  13. Vocabulary • Unique- something that is only one of a kind or is rare or remarkable • Weakness- a weak point or slight fault • Windup- a swinging movement of the arms while twisting the body just before pitching the ball • Teach your partner what these words mean.
