  1. Lab equipment

  2. Objectives • Describe • Draw • List the uses of each item of lab equipment

  3. Beaker This is a 250ml beaker. Beakers can be found in different sizes: 100ml, 250ml, 400ml marked on the beaker. Used as a container Can be heated

  4. Graduated Cylinder This is a graduated (marked) cylinder. Graduated cylinders can be found in different sizes: 10, 25, 35, 50, 100ml Used for measuring volume Graduated in ml

  5. Spatula Used for transferring solids Metal or porcelain

  6. Erlenmeyer Flask This is an Erlenmeyer flask. Erlenmeyer flasks can be found in different sizes: 125, 250, 500ml. Used as a container; can be heated Used for preparing mixtures Used for doing chemical reactions Has an opening and a flat bottom so that chemicals do not splash or swirl.

  7. Funnel This is a funnel. Small and big funnel It has a stem. Used for holding a filter paper to separate a mixture or solid and liquid Used in pouring Could be glass or plastic

  8. Volumetric Flask Calibrated in liter: marked with 1 volume. Used for preparing solutions Used for measuring ONLY one volume Has a stopper

  9. Round Bottom Flask Several sizes Used for heating Used for simple distillation

  10. Flat Bottom Flask Several sizes Used for heating Used for simple distillation

  11. Separatory Funnel Several sizes Has a stopper, a stop cock, and a stem Used for separating liquid mixtures

  12. Graduated Pipet Several sizes graduated in ml To measure and deliver specific volumes of liquid Very accurate in measuring volumes; more accurate than graduated cylinder Use a pipet filler to push the liquid through the pipet

  13. Volumetric Pipette Calibrated in ml (measures ONLY one volume) Several sizes marked to a certain volume measures and deliver specific volumes of liquid Very accurate in measuring volumes; more accurate than graduated cylinder Use a pipet filler to push the liquid through the pipet

  14. ProPipette or Pipette Pumps To push the liquid through the pipette

  15. Bunsen Burner Is a metal heating device connected to a gas outlet with a rubber tubing To heat chemicals To light a Bunsen burner: 1) close the gas and air valve 2) hold a light match on top of the burner tube 3) turn on the gas valve 4) open the air valve slowly 4) adjust the light to produce a light blue flame

  16. Test Tube Several sizes To do chemical test on small sample Can be heated

  17. Test Tube Holder Metal clamp To hold test tubes Hold it near the opening

  18. Test Tube Rack May be wood, metal, or plastic Hold test tubes in an upright position

  19. Ring Stand Metal rod with a heavy base Has many uses: support and or hold Has a lot of accessories

  20. Iron Ring Attach to the ring stand as a support for apparatus Hold funnel, wire gauze, beakers…

  21. Clamp Hold apparatus Can be attached to the ring stand

  22. Wire Gauze Wire screen with a ceramic fibered center (doesn’t burn) To spread the heat of a flame

  23. Mortal and Pestle Pestle Porcelain dish with a grinder grinds chemicals to powder

  24. Bottle Squeezable plastic bottle with angular tip washes apparatus with distilled water

  25. Stirring Rod Stir combination of liquids

  26. Dropper Glass and plastic droppers transfers small amount of liquid Every liquid has its own dropper Plastic used only once

  27. Tripod Tri: 3, pod: leg. Like a small table holds beakers or flasks being heated on a bunsen burner Can’t be used for a round bottom flask

  28. Evaporating Dish Porcelain dish Acts as a container for small amounts of liquids being evaporated

  29. Metallic Tongs picks up and holds hot apparatus

  30. Eye Goggles Used as eye glasses to protect the eyes
