  3. Social Contract • People give their rights to a strong ruler in exchange they have law and order

  4. Philosophes • Social critics of the mid-1700s • Believed people could apply reason to all aspects of life

  5. Secular • Non-religious outlook • People are questioning Church and its teachings

  6. Individualism • Look inward to find answers and meaning to questions

  7. Salon • Philosophes, artists, writers, scientists, and intellectuals met in drawing rooms for regular social gatherings
