  1. WARMUP!!!! What do you think a dead zone is? What does it have to do with oxygen levels in the water?

  2. So why are DEAD ZONES so Deadly?

  3. GOALS • Assess the role of nitrate and phosphate in the creation of ecological dead zones • Predict the location of dead zones based on nitrogen loading data.

  4. CLASS ACTIVITY: Creating a Dead Zone (in your notebooks) Tube A-LABEL THIS!!! Tube B-LABEL THIS!! Add 50 mL’s of Salt Water Take Dissolved Oxygen Level Add 10 mL’s of Miracle Gro • Add 50mL’s of salt water • Take Dissolved Oxygen Level What separates Beaker A from Beaker B?

  5. YOUR TASK: Map the Nitrogen Groups of 2: Part 1: On the Map -Map the Sewage Treatment Plants and Farmland Part 2: IN YOUR NOTEBOOKS -Predict where the DEAD zone will appear and why YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES

  6. USE YOUR NOODLE!!! Plot the location of the major nitrogen polluters into Long Island Sound. • Wallingford • Seymour • Shelton • Ridgefield • Wilton Where will the DEAD zones appear? Why? • Smithtown, NY • Huntington, NY

  7. USE YOUR NOODLE!! The high levels of nitrogen contained within fertilizers and sewage are a source of nutrition for microscopic organisms called phytoplankton. Predict what might happen to these organisms when large amounts of nitrogen enter the water http://www.absorblearning.com/media/attachment.action?quick=v3&att=2228

  8. ALGAE BLOOM.

  9. Dead Zone Notes Page 8: STEP 1: EUTROPHICATION STEP 2: PHYTOPLANKTON BLOOM STEP 3: HYPOXIA O2

  10. USE YOUR NOODLE!!! When phytoplankton die, they consume a large amount of oxygen. Explain how this might lead to dead zones.

  12. USE YOUR NOODLE!! Dead Zones are very common in Western Long Island Sound, but very rare in the Eastern part. Why? • Wallingford • Seymour • Shelton • Ridgefield • Wilton

  13. USE YOUR NOODLE!! • Greenwich is considering enacting a ban on the use of fertilizers in the summer months. Would you support such a ban? Why or Why Not?

  14. Use your NOODLE!!!!! The risk of dead zones is rising, and not just in the United States. Which three countries, have the greatest risk? Why?

  15. USE YOUR NOODLE!!!: • At the start of summer, companies like Home Depot and Lowes often market fertilizers to consumers. Is this a good idea? Why or Why not?

  16. WARMUP!!!! Examine bottles A and B from a few days ago. What do you notice about the beakers? What do you think has happened to the dissolved oxygen levels in the beakers? LET’S TEST THE DISSOLVED OXYGEN!!!! SO WHAT HAPPENED?

  17. GOALS • Assess the role of nitrogen in the creation of ecological dead zones • Predict the location of dead zones based on nitrogen loading data.

  18. USE YOUR NOODLE!!! Qindao, China was set to host the sailing competition for 2008 summer Olympics. However, they had a large problem. Take a look at the video and explain how this problem might have been created.

  19. YOUR TASK: Where’s the Nitrogen? Following the Cleanup at Qindao, China, Chinese Officials are worried about the formation of dead zones disrupting the sailing events. They want you to locate potential sources of EUTROPHICATION. GROUPS of 2: use the map -Part 1: in YOUR NOTEBOOK: -Locate 5 potential sources of nitrogen. YOU HAVE 15 MINUTES

  20. USE YOUR NOODLE!!! Where were the potential sources of EUTROPHICATION in Qindao? HYPOXIA NOTES PAGE 9 Cow Pasture SOURCES OF EUTROPHICATION Sewage Treatment Plant Residential Gardens Public Restrooms DAY 2: The Curious Case of Qindao, China Ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, city of Qindao spend a lot of money and time to clean up the beaches surrounding what would be the venue for the sailing event. Now they want you, the team at GHS associates, to advise them on how to keep the area free of green alage buildup. Your engineers have provided you with an overhead layout of the city. In your group you must: A: Identify 5 potential sources of eutrophication in the waters surrounding Qindao and how they led to the algae bloom B: Formulate a plan to keep the algae bloom from coming back.

  21. USE YOUR NOODLE!!! How can we clean up or limit the sources of EUTROPHICATION you just identified?

  22. YOUR TASK: Where’s the Nitrogen? Fearing another algae bloom, Qindao officials have generated a list of potential solutions to their eutrophication problem. They need your help in evaluating their efficiency. GROUPS of 2: On A whiteboard - Rank the solutions in order of EFFICIENCY. SOLUTION RANKING REASON YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES

  23. Use your NOODLE!!!!! What are some practices that can prevent or limit amount of eutrophication that occurs in Qindao? Cow Pasture HYPOXIA NOTES PAGE 9 WAYS TO CLEAN UP EUTROPHICATION Sewage Treatment Plant Residential Gardens Public Restrooms

  24. USE YOUR NOODLE!!! Based on the Graph below, during what month would HYPOXIA be the most severe? Why?

  25. Use your NOODLE!!!!! The dead zone that appears in the gulf of Mexico is 3-5 times larger than the dead zone found in Long Island Sound. Why?

  26. USE YOUR NOODLE!!!: -Human activity has a direct role in the creation of hypoxic dead zones. Identify one action humans can take that would have the greatest impact in lessening the size and effect of dead zones.
