  3. PHILOSOPHY OF COACHING • “Do it right, do it hard, or do it over.” • Play hard, have fun, be physical • Do not waste time • Organized • No excuses • Be consistent-praise immediately-correct immediately.

  4. MY BIGGEST MISTAKES IN COACHING • I used to say" don't listen to how I say it, but what I am saying.” • Now-I know how I say it is more important. • 2nd biggest mistake • Taking it out on those who do the right things. • Mad at those not present, but telling those that were present!

  5. WHAT I HAVE ALSO LEARNED • It is more important to coach the kid than X’s and O’s. • Coaches are easily replaceable. • Kids are not. • I really, really, really enjoying seeing deserving kids succeed. • You can win without having the most points • on the scoreboard

  6. WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN UT FOOTBALL PLAYERS • H.E.A.R.T • HONESTY • EFFORT • ATTITUDE • RESPONSIBILITY • TRUST

  7. DEMANDS ON UT FOOTBALL PLAYERS • 1. Be the best person you can be-HEART • 2. Be as strong as you can be in your values. • 3. Be the best student you can be. • 4. Be the best football player you can be.

  8. Nothing bad, only good • No performance enhancing supplements • Legal or illegal • No alcohol, drugs, tobacco • Eat right, sleep right, train hard

  9. UT FOOTBALL DEMANDS • Be on time • Follow the rules of the football program, UTHS, your community, and your family • Do your best on a daily basis

  10. ISSUES NOT TOLERATED IN UT FOOTBALL • NO HAZING • NO INITIATIONS • NO INTIMIDATION • NO THREATS • NO THEFT

  11. What I want your son to get from football: • A positive experience • Fun (winning) • Challenges offered • Challenges met • Reinforce positive values from home

  12. Kids play to meet two basic needs: • 1. The Need for Achievement • 2. The Need for Recognition • Can we meet these needs through our program?

JPF PHILOSOPHY • The general aim of the JPF is to provide a coordinated youth football program for all children of the communities feeding into the United Township High School, District 30, East Moline, Illinois. • JPF is organized exclusively for charitable, non-profitable, and educational purposes.

JPF PHILOSOPHY • The program provides for the growth and enrichment of the total individual. • The objectives are directed towards guiding and assisting each player’s mental, social, and physical abilities to their fullest capacity. • Emphasis is placed on sportsmanship as well as the development of skills.

  16. JPF PHILOSOPHY • The intent of JPF is to adopt the UT football system, teaching the high school offense, defense, and game philosophy assuring that the conduct of players and coaches is held to the same high standards of the high school staff.

  17. The bylaws are a sincere effort to promote respect for rules and authority, good sportsmanship, and self discipline among the contestants.

  18. The UT head coach and athletic department staff will serve as the primary advisors to JPF regarding this effort. Emphasis will be placed on providing a safe, enjoyable football experience while teaching sound fundamentals of the game and encouraging future participation.

  19. JPF FLAG • Cost $45.00 (considerations given to hardship cases) • Each player sells 2 spirit cards $15.00 each and keeps that money if paid in full at the time of registration. • Net cost = $15.00-player also receives a t-shirt

  20. JPF FLAG PRACTICE • First 2 weeks Monday through Thursday, then Tuesday through Thursday • Games played all three days

  21. JPF TACKLE • Cost $65.00 per player ( consideration given to hardships) • Each player sells 2 spirit cards $15.00 each and keeps that money if paid in full at the time of registration. • Net cost = $35.00 per player

  22. JPF TACKLE PRACTICE • First 2 weeks Monday through Thursday • Cut back to Tuesday through Thursday after Labor Day • I prefer Monday through Thursday, off Friday, play Saturday. • Attendance?

  23. OFF SEASON • Grades • Another UTHS sport • Football weight program • 3:10-4:20 • Mon-Wed-Thur • Work?-”I have to get a job.” • Job-work is NOT an excuse to miss

  24. WHY HAVE OFF-SEASON WEIGHTS? • Build size, strength, power, quickness • Identify level of commitment • Develop winners • Mental-bonding-confidence-trust • Players and coaches get to know each other • COMPETE!!!!!

  25. COMPETE YEAR ROUND • In the classroom • In other sports • In the weight room • Stay drug and alcohol free • To be a good son • To be a good teammate • To be a winner

  30. PARENTS ROLE • Be supportive-listen to your son • Be the shoulder to cry on • Use this situation to educate him • Can you trust us (the football staff)? • Injured, or hurt/sore?

  31. PARENTS ROLE • Help us develop the proper habits with your son. • Stress the importance of practice. • Stress responsibility. • Stress accountability. • Ask your son what is going on today with football?

  32. PARENTS ROLE • Get him to practice. • Teach him to be on time. • Teach him to give his best in everything he does. • Teach him the value of team over individual. • Teach him to believe in himself.

  33. PARENTS ROLE • Teach him to believe in his teammates. • Teach him to believe in his coaches. • Teach him to care.

  34. PARENTS ROLE • Formation of a “Football Booster Club” • No membership dues • No financial responsibilities • A support group for kids and coaches

  35. Only members of Football Boosters can buy certain clothing items designed by parents themselves. • Not a money maker. • A spirit campaign. • Show your support publicly.

  37. Dads • 1. Visual promotions • Signs in yards-wooden football painted in school colors with players # in the middle. • Sell for cost of materials • 2. JPF Golf Committee-hole sponsors-golfers

  39. IMPORTANT DATES • JPF Football Camp • June 27-June 30 (Tue.-Friday) • 10:15-11:30 • Cost: $15.00 (instruction plus t-shirt)

  40. High School Football Camp • Mon. June 26-Fri. July 14 • No camp July 3 & 4 • 8:00-10:00 • Cost:$50.00 (instruction, t-shirt, weight room times)

  41. H.S. PRACTICE • Wed. Aug. 9 VAR 6-7 am, 3-6 pm-no pads • Fresh/soph 3-6 pm • Thur., Fri., same • Sat. Aug. Aug. 12 F/S/V 8-10: 15 am-full pads • 11:30 am to 1:15 pm half pads • Mon. Aug 14 F/S/V 3-6 pm full pads
