  1. "Finnish expertise for innovative bioenergy solutions in India: Case study: Optimizing biomass based power generation in Tamil Nadu" B3 scholarship for conference participation Karthikeyan Natarajan Aim: A decision tool which includes three different models: (1) a spatial model that estimates the amount of biomass supply and industrial residues available for energy production, (2) an energy demand model calculates the amount of heat and power that can be delivered to the customers (industrial and public), (3) an optimization model that minimizes the complete costs of bioenergy supply chain from biomass supply to energy delivery at the end users to determine the optimal location, size and configurations of biomass based power generation plants in Tamil Nadu. This study also provides insight into the techno-economic performance of the CHP production technology and also the influence of industrial biomass competition on new energy systems. The results of this study can be of significant importance to policy makers and stakeholders to choose an appropriate strategy regarding the investment opportunity in biomass based power generation in the southernmost state of India. Significance: • Background information on Finnish biomass based CHP production and opportunities for India. • Identifying the potential future bioenergy business investment and developmental opportunities for local government, companies and communities (case Tamil Nadu). • Model outputs can be applied to efficiently use the limited available natural resources in a cost efficient and sustainable manner. Outline of the system structure Student: Karthikeyan.Natarajan@uef.fi Supervisors:Prof. Paavo Pelkonen (UEF, Joensuu) Place: School of Forest Sciences, UEF, Joensuu 80101 Dr. Sylvain Leduc (IIASA, Vienna)
