  1. Spanish settlements The Start of Permanent Settlements in the New World

  2. Impact • The Spanish are the 1st to set up permanent settlements in the Americas!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • The way they rule their colonies will have a lasting impact on relations with the natives, colonization of the rest of the New World, and the future political turmoil of Latin America

  3. 3 Types of Settlements Encomiendas and Haciendas Missions • Encomienda: large farms where a group of Indians lived under a Spanish colonist’s rule and supervision • Promised to teach and protect the Indians • Had to convert the Indians to Christianity • Catholicism • Hacienda: plantation or ranch; actual estate where the Spanish colonist lived • Religious settlement • Church, living area for the priest, separate living area for the Indians, workshop, farm, convent • Had to teach the natives Spanish, Christianity and European customs

  4. Political Organization Vice-royalties and Viceroys • Viceroyalties: a division of land politically; like a state/mini-country that belonged to Spain • New Spain (Cortes) • Peru (Pizarro) • Viceroy: a stand-in for the king in the New World; like a governor over the state • There becomes a huge fight/power struggle between the viceroys and the priests (political leaders vs. spiritual leaders)—fighting over the Native Americans

  5. Native Americans and Christianity Accepted it Faked it (go to worship like they did before with nature, medicine men, ancestor worship) Outright said “No!!!!”

  6. Social Classes Peninsulares (Spanish and born IN SPAIN) Creole (Both Spanish parents but born IN THE AMERICAS) Mestizos (Half Spanish/Half Native American) And Mulattoes (Half Spanish/Half African) Native Americans/Africans/Slaves
