Advantages of media in class • Good listening activity with visual and audio makes it real life • You can introduce pop culture or famous people and events • Usually, the conversation and pace are natural – exposure to natural American English usage • Tracking conversations between 2 or more people adds complexity

  5. Advantages of media in class • Plot and scenery makes it more realistic • Good opportunity for students to act out the scene after the clip • Good opportunity for discussion about the topic • Voices are different from the teacher’s • Vocabulary is usually rich; you can scaffold the new words

Some recommended steps • Before class • Pick a movie clip that you want to use • Get the free script from http://www.script-o-rama.com/table2.shtml or the site of your choice • Copy the parts of the script that you want to use • Create a vocabulary buildup, an introduction document, cloze of the scene, copies of the script, comprehension questions , and discussion questions(or a subset of these)

Some recommended steps • In class • Explore the students’ familiarity with the topic • Cloze exercise to present plot and background information about the clip • Play the clip as many times as the students wish to complete another cloze exercise about the scene • Have students practice the scene in pairs • Have students volunteer to act out the scene in front of the class • Comprehension questions and/or discussion questions

  8. What about music? • Good for holidays, grammar topics • To find free lyrics go to http://www.songlyrics.com • Find a video of someone singing the song at Youtube.com. People like Frank Sinatra, Julie Andrews, and Barbra Streisand are easy to understand and there is often a close-up clip of them singing the song. • The rhythm of a song is easy to remember. Many times, it sounds like natural speech.

How to create a lesson around a song • Open MS Word and an Internet session • In your internet session, go to www.songlyrics.com • Search for “I’d like to teach the world to sing” • Click on the title under song matches • Highlight the lyrics • On the menu, • Edit • Copy • Go to MS Word. You will have a new blank document open. • On the ribbon, click on Paste • Scan the lyrics for new vocabulary • Make your cloze exercise for the song by replacing some words with a blank

Go to youtube.com to find the video clip (continued) • Go to youtube.com to find the video clip • In your internet session, go to www.youtube.com to find a clip • Type “I’d like to teach the world to sing” in the search box and click on Search • Try different clips to see what you like best. For class, we’ll demonstrate. • We picked http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVa0WPVuEOI • To make the clip take up the whole screen click on the icon below the video clip • Hit ESC to return to the smaller version • Save the url to a document on your flash drive so you can get to the site quickly.

Why should you use Smart Room equipment? • Great opportunity for variety Students need more than the teacher writing on the board • Easy access to the internet • The document camera, if you have one, is easy and environmentally correct • What can you do if you don’t have a Smart Room? • Ask your IT support for a portable Smart cart • Ask your supervisor • What else? • Additional suggestion: Ask for and use time in a computer lab.

How to use Smart room equipment • There is a laminated card in each classroom that explains how to use the equipment • On the teacher’s computer, go to the internet • Copy the url from the saved document on your flash drive • Turn on the projector • Make sure the pc is the active piece of equipment • Now, everyone in class can see what is on the teacher’s computer on the screen in the front of the class • You can use your electronic copy of the cloze to fill in the correct answers Or • If you have one, have the students come to the document camera to fill in the blanks.
