  3. Learning Target ESL Teachers can identify and understand the new Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS) and how Edge Textbooks can support ESL student progress toward these standards.

What Do the Common Core State Standards Have to Say About ELLs? • All students should be held to the same high expectations outlined in KCAS including ELLs. • Students come from a variety of language levels and educational backgrounds. • Students may require additional time, instructional support, aligned assessments.

  6. ELLs and English Language Arts • ELLs should have access to: • Literacy –rich environments • Instruction in foundational skills • Coursework that prepares ELLs for postsecondary education • Opportunities for classroom discourse and interaction that are well-designed to develop communicative skills. • Ongoing assessment and feedback • Access to speakers of English who can serve as models and provide support.
