  2. It was the first Federal road project and it started in Cumberland, Maryland

  3. Construction began in 1815, and in 1818 the road reached Wheeling, West Virginia .

  4. The road first went from Cumberland Maryland to Wheeling West Virginia

  5. After the Panic of 1819 the economic downturn temporally halted the further expansion but in the 1820s construction began again.

  6. This National Road stretched to Columbus, Ohio in 1833 and then it stretched to Vandalia, Illinois by 1850.
