  2. Standards • Standards – Objectives required by the state. • Readiness Standards: 70% • The standards which 4th grade teaches • Supporting Standards: 30% • The standards they came with that we will build on, which they studied in previous grades

  3. Types of Answer Choices • The STAAR Mathematics assessments will have 3 griddable problems. This allows students the opportunity to answer without being influenced by answer choices. • Examples seen on Countdown to STAAR • The test will also include 31 multiple choice problems. • Total number of questions: 34

  4. Reading • Comprehension: 36 multiple choice • All passages • Questioning from inferencing and context clues • Paired selections • Various genres • Poetry • Drama • Non-Fiction/Fiction • Expository/Informational • Biography

  5. Math • Multiple step problems (more than 2 steps) • Problem solving using all operations • Multiplication table (15 X 15) • Strategies – • Working back • Reasonableness • Guess/check • Estimation • Measurement – conversions (length, mass, weight, capacity, time)

  6. Writing • Students will take the writing test in both 4th and 7th grades. The writing test will be administered on Tuesday, April 9th. Students will be given 4 hours to complete the test. • Fourth graders will be required to write one essay: • Expository – explain an example with details • Fourth graders are expected to be able to revise and edit passages provided in multiple choice format: 8 revision and 16 editing = 24 questions

  7. Revising and Editing • Revision - focus on effectiveness: • strengthening/improving sentence structure: the introduction and conclusion, organization/progression, development, word choice, and sentences (compound & complex) • Editing - focus on correctness (conventions): • capitalization, punctuation, spelling, grammar usage, and sentence boundaries (fragments and run-ons)

  8. STAAR Expository Prompt There are people in our lives who are special to us. Sometimes this person is a teacher or coach, a parent, a brother or sister, or even a friend.

  9. STAAR Writing Scoring • Score Point 1—VERY LIMITED • Score Point 2—BASIC • Score Point 3—SATISFACTORY • Score Point 4—ACCOMPLISHED

Just A Reminder! • The state of Texas has very strict guidelines for the administration of state testing. • The campus will be closed the week of testing days to all visitors. • NO BACKPACKS PLEASE! • Cell Phone and Electronic Device Statement: • Students are not permitted to have cell phones or electronic devices during testing days. • Cell phone use and/or electronic devices usage during testing is a serious violation and will be considered cheating.
