  2. Dental education success is achieved by learning and practicing • Positive • Productive and • Creative

  3. Communication is successful because COMMUNICATION

  4. If you are happy with yourself • Love and trust among the staff • Change patient’s value by first getting to know them • Listen = make judgments and evaluations after listening, be critical

  5. The message sent is not always the message received.

  6. Behavior = body language

  7. Leadership = be in control of situation but don’t be afraid to

  8. Smile at your patient, wink

  9. Tell them how well / good they are doing

  10. How do you send messages?

  11. Spoken = tone Facial = expression Written = different fonts, bold, underline

  13. Comfort • Function • Health Not necessarily in order of pt’schoice

  15. Neglect = Decay/perio disease evaluation • Accident = trauma (accidents)

  16. We have all the scientific capabilities to achieve our goal of preventing tooth loss. What haven’t we?

  19. 1. First educate the profession i.e. communication in the various professional dental schools education in communication for DHT students

  20. Education of the public = not only individual pts but groups • Youth = school • Radio, TV, Video

  21. Besides education the next hurtle is money. Pt. must establish priorities for money (we must help people want what they need)

  22. Dentistry and its importance competes for patients’

  23. Time (floss and brushing) • Attention (needs to acquire techniques) • Money

  24. Communication to the public will be achieved because of team work = all members of the dental office must be involved

  25. Gimmicks (visual aids are secondary)

  26. Use charts, models, pictures, but examples are merely tools.

  27. Don’t forget – pictures are worth a thousand words and we are living in a graphic society.

  28. List the piece of equipment that many dental offices have for education. Intra-oral camera

  29. The education must make the pt. aware of: • Dentistry’s Value and • To WANT it

  30. The Dental Educator must be • Skillful • Perceptive • Able to organize and present • Flexibility – review and change

  31. The bottom line is that the team must be willing to spend their • Energy • Time • Thinking = what could I have done differently • Skills
