4th Battalion then… WATTS BARRACKS
The Much Needed Cultural Shift • “The Zoo”: Last year it was recommended that the narrative be changed to what “The Zoo” meant. To change the negative perception into a positive one. • By making deliberate changes to the physical appearance of the barracks, changing the way we talked about the COs/BN, holding Commanders and Seniors accountable, and focusing on how each member represented the BN…change occurred very quickly. • Second verse, same as the first: With strong leadership in each CO and a strong BN staff, 4th BN will continue to improve upon the perception and reputation it now has among the SCCC.
Conduct: Inmates no longer run the asylum 4BN: 16-17 4 BN: 15-16 • 15 AWOL > 4 hours 5 • 6 Hazing 0 • 17 4th Class Violation (Major) 0 • 13 Alcohol on Campus 0 • 9 Conduct Unbecoming 0 • 2 Discredit to The Citadel 0 • 4Disobedience of a lawful order 0 • 3Disrespect 0 • 1 Racism 0 • 1 Drugs 0 • 1 Fireworks 0 • 0 Intimidation 0 • 0 Failure to report, 4thClsVio. 0 • 0 Social Media 0
Clear Left and Right Limits:Command Teams take charge • The command teams within 4th BN set the expectations early for the year: • Cadre will be a positive and professional experience • Eliminate hazing (to include servitude) • Zero drugs and alcohol in barracks • Address disrespect (at all levels) • Assault, Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment • Adhering to the Honor Code…work in progress…
Initial Focus Areas & Strategy Discussionsin other words…how we did this Areas identified from the conclusion of last year • Accountability, an all the time thing (start with little “a” work to big “A”) • Professionalism, teach it-display it-demand it (Teaching vs harassing, Cadre ROE, “traditions”) • Bystander Intervention vs Toleration (Little problems don’t become big problems) • Responsible vs Irresponsible Drinking (Zero tolerance for drinking on campus) • All-ins (Knowing where your people are and that they are ok) • Building a Culture of Success aka The Family Factor (Unit & individual performance, taking care of each other)
Again, we started here… Citadel Safari: May 4, 2016
