  2. How did Bolivia gain independence?

  3. In 1809, afterthe Chuquisaca Revolution and Laz Paz Revolution, “Government Juntas” wereinstalled. • Juntas are independentgovernmentsmadeduetodevelopmentsoccurring in Spain.

  4. These juntas weredefeatedsoonaftercreation, however, and Spanishruled once more.

  5. Guerrilla warfarebegan, whichmeansthatarmedcivilians use militarytacticsagainst a largerarmy.

  6. Althoughthearmiesweredefeated, theSpanishneverhad complete control of UpperPeru, nowcalledBolivia, again.

  7. Forthenextsevenyears (1810-1817), lots of fightingoccurredagainst “royalists,” butthe guerrillas hadmain control of the country side—this control turnedintozoneswherepatriotismwouldevolveinto a fightforindependence.

  8. The Final Battle • OnApril 1st, 1825, therewas a final battlebetweenGeneral Pedro Antonio de Olañeta and his forces and Simón Bolívar Palacio and Antonio José de SucreAlcalá and his forces.

  9. Sucre’s forces beat Olañeta’s forces, and he was killed by his own men. • Upper Peru, Bolivia, was no longer under the control of the Spanish.

  11. Independence at last! • AnassemblywasgatheredbyBolivar and Sucre in orderto determine thefuture of theregion. • Thedelegatesallagreedthattheywantedittobeanindependentnation—notattachedtoanything. • DeclaredindependenceonAugust 6th, 1825!
