  2. 5 Types of Opinion Pieces • Column – one person on staff; uses “I”; theme • Editorials – opinion of entire staff; never has a name attached; “we” used in article • Editorial Cartoons – visual representation of the issue; exaggerated to prove a point • Reviews – person’s opinion on event/piece of work (movies, CDs, books, restaurants) • Letters to the Editor – general public in response to something in the paper/world (makes it a public forum)

  4. Contents of an Opinion Piece • Current issue affecting many readers • Gives readers all the facts and concerns • Gives suggestions to readers • Balanced opinion

  5. Construction of an Opinion Piece • Official view so often thought out • Free from emotive terms • Balanced argument

  6. Must Haves… • Intro, body, solution and conclusion • Objective explanation of the issue • Offers opinions of opposing viewpoint • Engage issues…no name-calling • Offers solutions to problems • Solid conclusion summarizes opinion

Types of Editorials • Argument/Persuasion – takes a firm stand on a topic and tries to convince reader to agree • Information/Interpretation – explains meaning or significance of situation or event • Tribute/Appreciation – praises a person or activity • Entertainment – humorous (light), satirical (serious)

  8. Structure of an Opinion Piece • Introduction states the problem and position statement • Body expresses support of your opinion • Solution to the problem OR opposing viewpoint and rebuttal • Conclusion offers call to action

  9. Let’s Take a Look • Sample Editorial (Opinion of The Ledger staff) • Sample Column (Aubrey’s personal opinion) • With shoulder partner, identify the problem, writer’s position, supporting evidence, opposing viewpoints/rebuttal, call to action • Be prepared to share!

  10. Opinion Piece Assignment • Do you think character traits and leadership skills are essential in high school curriculum? Why or why not? • Have a better idea? Pitch it to me! • 5 Point Rubric: • Introduction with problem and position statement • Body at least two paragraphs, supporting evidence and backed up by referencing other articles, etc. • Opposing viewpoint presented and rebuttal offered • Closing has a call to action (asks reader to do something) • Free of grammatical, spelling, structure errors
