Introduction • Climate Showcase Communities grant program established in 2009 to: • Reduction of Emissions of Greenhouse Gases By Development of an Innovative Climate Projects Coordination Structure and Implementation of RECYCLING, RENEWABLE ENERGY and GREEN BUILDING PROGRAMS in the Gila River Indian Community

Gila River Project Goal • Overall Goal: To reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 20,000 metric tons • 3 Innovative climate project approaches • Household Energy use reductions – Incandescent / CFL bulb exchange • Renewable energy – 5 megawatt photovoltaic project • Curbside Recycling program implementation • Sustainability • Strong program structure, coordination, and tribal capacity • Planning, funding application, and ongoing greenhouse gas emissions reducing projects.

Project objectives • 5 Key Objectives • Innovation & Building of Tribal Capacity by a Climate Projects Specialist (i.e., GRIC DEQ Environmental Quality Project Associate) • Curbside Recycling Program Pilot • Assessment and Plan Development for Solar Photovoltaic Panel Installation(s) • Residential Energy Use Reduction & Development of Green Building Program • Industrial Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction

Objective 1 – Project work • Environmental Quality Project Associate • LEED Green Associate accreditation • Coordination: • Pilot Recycling program education and activities • Current solid waste stream information (DPW) • Single-stream recycling information • Green Building projects • Updates and promotion of Tribal Projects / DEQ projects (outdoor solar/CFL fixtures and solar tube lighting) • Renewable Energy Team (RET) member • Planning / Feasibility study

Objective 2 - Project work • To decrease overall waste stream and save tipping fee costs for DPW • Curbside Recycling Program • 96-gallon recycling carts were delivered to 676 households May 2011 • First pickup showed ~30% participation • 2 tons (i.e., 4440 pounds of clean material collected • Second pickup showed ~45% participation • 2.5 tons of clean material

Objective 5 - Project work • Industrial Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction • Follow-up to Emissions Inventory • Collect data from electricity / energy providers: • Gila River Indian Community Utility Authority (GRICUA) • Salt River Project (SRP) • Arizona Public Service (APS) • Southwest Gas (natural gas) • Gila River Farms (propane) • San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP)
