  2. Science in sport The contribution science has made in sport is far reaching and the advances that science has made through technology has benefitted sport tremendously. Science has enabled: Improvements to be made Raised standards Improved safety

  3. Science in sport Equipment The development of new materials means many sports benefit from lighter, stronger and more durable equipment. Polymers and alloys such as kevlar, fibreglass and titanium are used to make rackets in place of the original wooden ones.

  4. Science in sport Equipment con’t Pole vaulters originally used bamboo poles! Now fibreglass or carbon fibre. Cricketers wear pads made of condensed foam which is 50% lighter than previous equipment. Cyclists have specific bikes for specific events. Helmets are aerodynamically designed.

  5. Science in sport Materials The development of synthetic materials has revolutionised sport. Swimming Swimmers used to wear a costume as small as possible. Now full-body suits made of lycra, polyester and nylon (all man made materials) are helping swimmers become more streamlined, reducing drag and thus setting new world records.

  7. Science in sport Materials con’t Surfaces These have rapidly improved. ‘astroturf’ is outdated as now you have a choice of synthetic turf, synthetic fibre grass blades and rubber and sand infills.

  8. Science in sport Materials con’t Footwear Designs make use of composite materials to provide strength and flexibility.

  9. Science in sport Facilities Gymnasts – Used to have to perform in gymnasiums, but can now train in purpose built facilities with safety pits.

  10. Science in sport Facilities Tennis clubs have indoor facilities where they can train all year rather than just in summer. Stadiums have retractable roofs.

  11. Science in sport Facilities Fitness gyms have state of the art equipment which is designed for specific muscles or muscle groups. Cardiovascular equipment will have in built monitors for HR and recovery times.

  12. Science in sport Examiners Tip: It is important to keep up to date with technological advances as these happen very quickly and frequently. Having an up to date example to give in any exam question can be very beneficial.
