  2. When the word temptation is mentioned, what comes to mind? Matthew 4:1-11 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

  3. 4But He answered and said, "It is written, `MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.' " 5 Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, `HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and `ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.' “

  4. 7Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, `YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.' " 8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me." 10 Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, `YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.' " 11 Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him Matthew 4:1-11

  5. Put what Jesus was tempted with in today’s culture, what are those same temptations today? • How does our culture handle those temptations?

  6. Different type of temptation • Tempted to want Christianity without commitment • Tempted to do it by yourself-you believe no one else is going through it • Tempted to take the easy way • Tempted to not believe it until you see it • Tempted to believe there is no way out except to give in to it

  7. Tempted to believe just once won’t hurt • Now that you have ruined your life, you are beyond God’s use, and might as well enjoy sinning How are these just as dangerous as the ones we named at the beginning?

  8. How do you and I deal with these temptations? The necessity of trials and temptations teach us several things: • Temptation is not meant to make us sin – it is meant to make it possible for us not to sin. • It is not meant to make us bad – it is meant to make us good. • It is not meant to weaken us – it is meant to make us stronger, finer, and purer

  9. Martin Luther was asked how he overcame the devil, he replied, “Well, when he comes knocking at the door of my heart, and asks ‘Who lives here?’ the dear Lord Jesus goes to the door and says, “Martin Luther used to live here, but he has moved out. Now I live here.” When Christ fills our lives Satan has no entrance.
