Stewardship • We have already learned about our responsibility to other people. • Today we will look at our responsibility to the planet
Stewardship • Stewardship means that we are all carers of the planet. • We all have to be responsible for looking after the world.
Global warming • One of the biggest problems in the world today is globalwarming • Over the last 100 years humans have been making the earth get hotter. This is called global warming. • The average temperature of the earth has already increased by about one degree centigrade.
What causes global warming? Burning coal, gas and oil pollutes the air by releasing greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide)
Who is responsible? The world’s wealthiest countries have emitted more than their fair share of greenhouse gases. Resultant floods, droughts and other Climate Change impacts continue to fall disproportionately on the world’s poorest people and countries, many of which are in Africa. "Archbishop Desmond Tutu, June 2005."
Effects of global warming Higher temperatures are melting the ice caps.
Effects of global warming • Global warming is here now. • If all the glaciers melted the sea would rise more than 200 feet
Melting ice caps = rising sea levels = flooding • Bangladeshis are not responsible for global warming but millions of them are affected by flooding caused by it
Hotter weather = droughts • In 2008 14 million people in Africa had to leave their homes because of droughts • As temperatures increase hundreds of millions of people will not be able to grow enough food to eat
Is the weather changing? Ballinasloe 2009 Ireland’s worst flooding in decades -17.7 degrees in Carlow in Jan 2010
The future: A hotter planet... Some scientists think temperatures will increase by 6.5 degrees by 2100
What can you do? • The amount of carbon you are responsible for is called your carbon footprint • If you reduce your carbon footprint you will be helping to prevent global warming and all its problems
Stewardship Your planet, your future...
