  6. Enhancing Wind Power • Joby Energy Airborne Windturbines • http://www.jobyenergy.com/tech • Japanese Wind Power Breakthrough • http://www.mnn.com/green-tech/research-innovations/blogs/japanese-breakthrough-will-make-wind-power-cheaper-than-nuclea?hpt=hp_bn11 • Maglev Windturbineshttp://inhabitat.com/super-powered-magnetic-wind-turbine-maglev/ • http://www.maglevwindturbine.com/

  7. How do they work? • Solar Powered ! • Wind moves blades • Blades turn generator • DC current generated by rotating coil & magnets

  8. P = ½ ρΑV3 The Power of Wind • P = Power (Watts) • ρ = Density of air (kg/m3) • A = Swept area (m2) • V = Wind speed (m/s)

  9. Measure your Power • Power = Current x Voltage • You will use a Multimeter to measure the current and voltage while your windmill is spinning • Watts = Amps x Volts

  10. Variables to Consider ? Design to Optimize

  11. Data to Compare • Name of your Windmill • Current measured in Amps • Voltage measured in Volts • Calculate Power: Watts = Amps x Volts • Diameter of Blades in cm

  12. Your Materials • Paper • Bamboo Skewers • Hot Glue • Cork Hub

  13. Procedure • Discuss the pros and cons of at least three designs with your team before beginning construction. • Select the favored design and construct it on the cork hub attached to the generator. • Test your design at the testing station. • Iterate: Can you imagine changes that would capture more power?

  14. Sources • Horizontal Axis TurbinesThe Wind Ninja • Savonious photosPegasus • Darrieus photoWorld of Energy Wind Power • Off The Grid Living • Estonian Windmill • Helix Wind
