  5. Why it’s so important to invest in online resources from trusted sources...

  6. All JCS resources offer quality-assured content and a ‘safe’ environment for students: • the source of all content is made clear – authors, book titles, dates etc. • the content reviewed for accuracy, lack of bias etc, and cannot be changed by users • the images are of excellent quality for displaying on whiteboards. • resources are updated regularly • the rights cleared for educational use

  7. Important reasons from the research published by the Think Tank, ‘Demos’... “...many young people are not careful, discerning users of the internet. They are unable to find the information they are looking for or trust the first thing they do. They do not apply fact checks to the information they find. They are unable to recognise bias and propaganda and will not go to a varied number of sources.” ‘Truth, lies and the internet, a report into young people’s digital fluency’, Demos, September 2011

Why use subscription e-resources? • Quality assured resources - internet resources can be inaccurate or biased, e.g. Many universities ban use of Wikipedia • Originality - find more original material than simply “Googling” • Demonstrate Research Skills – A level students’ lack of research skills is often cited as a barrier in their transition to university • Digital Natives – Yale Information Society Project, 4 April 2009, John Palfrey

  11. What can the Learning Centre do for you? We can provide sessions on using eResources to your students. This can be anything from a quick 5 minutes to a full lesson. Last year 122 sessions were delivered to a wide range of subjects. Example : Applied Business Before the sessions : 81% of students felt either unsure or unconfident about their research skills. After the sessions: 89% of students felt either very confident or confident about their use of research skills online. “These lessons should be done more….” “Very good, is VERY useful!” “Cheers!” “Lesson was very useful and helpful”

  22. Outcomes • Library Service – raised profile – INSET Day; Governors Training; tutorials • Met College’s Safeguarding obligations • Increased tutors’ confidence (96% felt confident or more confident)
