Kennedy- 1961-63 • House and Senate member for 14 years • First Catholic President • “New Frontier”-main focus was to improve the economy, help the poor, and launch be the first in the “space race” • Started Peace Corps – believed wealthy had an obligation to help those less fortunate • Only 43 years old

  5. 1959 Bay of Pigs Invasion Kennedy became concerned when in 1959, Fidel Castro overthrew Batista, and became the new Cuban dictator Castro was supported because he promised to improve the lives of the poor- he also blamed the wealthy & U.S. companies in Cuba for exploiting them

  6. Once in power, Castro seized large, privately-owned plantations and property owned by foreign corporations (some U.S.) The U.S. broke off diplomatic relations with Cuba and refused to accept Castro as the legitimate leader of Cuba Castro then developed ties with the Soviet Union Castro & Khrushchev

  7. CIA secret plan to overthrow Castro Although word leaked out about the scheme- Kennedy went ahead with the plan despite criticism

  8. The Bay of Pigs invasion was a total disaster- an air strike failed to destroy Cuba's air force- and the Cuban army easily outmatched the 1500 invaders

  9. 1961 Berlin Wall built Designed by the Soviets as a way to stop East Germans from crossing into West Berlin

  10. Oct 16, 1962 Satellite photos confirmed the USSR was building missile silos in Cuba

  11. What to do? • Options • Negotiate with Khrushchev, which would make the US look weak • Invade Cuba, which could start a war with Soviets • Bomb missile sites, which could start a war • Naval blockade to prevent Soviets from shipping the nukes

  13. Khruschav sent Kennedy a letter pledging to remove missiles if the U.S. stayed out of Cuba's business Kennedy emerged as a hero
