  3. Mental Lexicon

  4. Mental lexicon • the mental state of knowledge about words. • It specifies how a word is spelt, pronounced, its parts of speech and what it means. • But it is convenient to think of the lexicon as containing not the meaning of words, but the pointers to those meanings.

  5. The significance of the lexicon • Many linguistic theories put the lexicon in a central place.

  6. Levelt maintained that the lexicon is the DRIVING FORCE in sencence production. • Formulation processes are lexically driven. • This means that grammatical and phonological encodings are mediated by lexical entries.

  7. The lexicon is also important in comprehension, especially oral comprehension, which, in turn, facilitates L2 acquisition. (Why?)

  8. If words can’t be isolated from the speech stream and if lexical information can’t be used to interpret the utterances, then the input will not be comprehended.
