  2. Kansas Territory • Nebraska Act passes in May 1854 • Divided territory in two • Missouri compromise repeated in the territory • Established popular sovereignty

  3. Bleeding Kansas • March 1855 Kansas has enough people to hold an election for becoming a territory • “Border ruffians” cross border and voted illegally. Won false majority for proslavery • Est. government at Lecompton for proslavery • Anti slavery government est. at Topeka

  4. Sack of Lawrence • Antislavery created Lawrence called traitors • 800 men raided Lawrence on May 21, 1856 • Burn down abolitionist HQ, destroy printing presses and sack houses.

  5. Pottawatomie Massacre • John brown- abolitionist thought god wanted him to fight slavery • May 24th His followers attacked proslavery Pottawatomie creek hacked five men's hands off then killed them. • Triggered incidents through out Kansas 200 some people killed • John brown then fled from kansas.
