  2. 1982 Gliding Operations • First Course at YBTH in 1982; • Completed 4 full week courses per year; • Most frames cross-hired from BSC; • AVGAS purchased from BAC; • No formal airfield protocols in place for SIMOPS • Accommodation at YBTH (old building)

  3. Gliding Operations in the Late 80’s and the 90’s • Increase to 8 full week courses per year • 250-270 sorties per course • 2000-2500 sorties per year • Accommodation on aerodrome (old building) • Additional gliders operated – up to 9 including aero-tow aircraft • AVGAS purchased from BAC

  4. Cont… • AAFC own 2x Gliders; • Most Gliders hired from BSC • Tugs hired from BSC • Hangarage loaned by various airport users during AAFC Courses • NSW Powered flying operations at Camden

  5. 2000 – 2013 cont… In 2004 Gliding operations were moved to the Hunter Valley as the accommodation at YBTH was deemed unsuitable for residential accommodation.

  6. 2000 – 2013 cont… • In 2006 due to increased RAAF funding NSW AAFC gliding operations returned to YBTH • Capability returned to 8 full courses per annum • RAAF funded commercial accommodation in Bathurst

  7. 2000 – 2013 cont… • In 2011 NSW powered operations were terminated at Camden and relocated to Bathurst under a local External Service Provider • RAAF started funding local hangarage hire • AAFC aviation capability significantly increases across all of NSW

  8. 2000 – 2013 cont • Circuit directions changed on 17/35 to maintain separation during SIMOPS • Gable markers on northern side of 08/26 widened by BRC so that parked gliders are outside of the 45m obstacle clearance (from centre line) requirements when conducting SIMOPS on RWY08/26

  9. 2000 – 2013 cont… Around this period of time the RAAF and AAFC were conservatively injecting around $450,000.00 per annum into the Bathurst township and aviation community

  10. 2014 to now • Opening of a multimillion gliding facility on Windsock Way (BATAC) • AAFC purchase 2x Pawnee Tugs • RAAF purchase 6x Gliders (22 nationally) • Additional flying outside of AAFC residential course for both powered and gliding on occasional weekends • Gliding sortie rate around 3000 per annum at YBTH

  11. 2014 to now… • Additional hangar spaced hired • Capability maintained with 8 full week courses and a further 2 weeks near Tamworth • Implementation of YBTH Gliding Noise Abatement Procedures • AAFC National Flying Competition moved to Bathurst annually

  12. 2014 to now… • Powered flying now run by the AAFC again after a considerable break using External Service Providers at YBTH • Gliders all equipped with FLARM, Mode S Transponders and dual radios

Future • Gliding operations will steady at 10 frames (Gliders and Tugs) • Widening of RWY17/35 Grass • Possible widening of RWY08/26 • RAAF procurement of powered aircraft for the AAFC (Estimate 5x for YBTH) • CASA requested to NOTAM gliders to conduct RH circuits on RWY08 • Additional infrastructure at YBTH
