  1. Unit 7Acid/Base ChemistryandChemical Reactions Chemistry I Mr. Patel SWHS

  2. Topic Outline • MUST know chemical nomenclature!!! • Acid/base Definitions and Properties (19.1) • Types of Chemical Reactions (11.2) • Balancing Equations (11.1) • Parts of a Chemical Equation (11.1) • Factors Affecting Reaction Rates (18.1)

  3. Acid/Base Chemistry

  4. Properties of Acids

  5. Properties of Bases

  6. Neutralization

  7. Strength of an Acid or Base

  8. pH Scale

  9. Indicator

  10. Titration • Titration Video • Titrations are used to determine the concentration of an unknown acid or base

  11. Biological Use of Acids and Bases • How Anatacids Work • Antacids are used to treat heartburn

  12. Acid/Base Chemistry • Play a large role in biological systems • Acids – Produce protons (H1+ or H3O1+) • Base – Produce hydroxide ions (OH1-)

  13. Properties of Acids • EX: Acetic Acid, Sulfuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Carbonic acid • Tart or Sour Taste • Electrolytes – conduct electricity • Strength depends on the acid • React with metals to produce H2

  14. Properties of Bases • EX: Ammonia, soap, bleach, antacids • Bitter Taste • Feels slippery • Electrolytes – conduct electricity • Strength depends on the acid • Stomach Acid and Milk of Magnesia • Magnesium hydroxide in water

  15. Neutralization • HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O • Acid + Base  Water + Salt • Neutralization Reaction – acids can cancel out bases

  16. Strength of an Acid or Base • The strength depends on the amount of H1+ ions in solution • This is called pH scale • Works by a power of 10

  17. pH Scale Acids have pH less than 7 Bases have pH greater than 7 Pure Water is 7

  18. Indicator • Weak acids or bases • They change color at a certain pH • Indicate the change from acidic to basic • Phenolphthalein changes form colorless to deep pink as it goes acidic to basic

  19. Titration • Titration Video • Titrations are used to determine the concentration of an unknown acid or base

  20. Biological Use of Acids and Bases • How Anatacids Work • Antacids are used to treat heartburn
